inch : A measure of length still in common use, together with the foot, for a person's height. There are twelve inches in a foot, with one inch equal to 2.54 cm.

income tax : A personal tax which is levied on the amount of money a person earns a year or on the amount of money a person receives from investments in a year. At present the rate of income tax is 29 % on the first £ 17,200 earned, with higher rates for earnings greater than this.

Ireland : The most westerly country of the British Isles, separated from mainland Britain by St George's Channel and the Irish Sea. The name Ireland can be used to apply to the island, but is normally used to mean the Republic of Ireland, as distinct from Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

Jack the Ripper : the nickname given to the undiscovered murderer of at least seven women in London in 1888. ('ripper' means 'cutter' : all the victims had their throats cut)
