Kensington Palace : A royal palace in Kensington, London, originally known as Nottingham House, bought by King William III, and from then on until 1760 the main private residence of the sovereign. Queen Victoria was born there in 1819. Today, part of the building is still occupied by relations of the royal family.

King Arthur : King Arthur is a half-legendary, half-historical king of Britain, and the hero of several tales of medieval romance, the so-called 'Arthurian cycle' with the famous Knights of the Round Table and the magician Merlin. The historical king Arthur may have been a Briton who fought against the invading Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century. His 'kingdom' is traditionally set in the west, with his 'capital' in the Somerset town of Glastonbury. Stories about King Arthur and his knights have been constantly told over the centuries, and the name of King Arthur is still preserved today as that of a national hero and king. Knights of the Round Table (the) : The legendary group of knights, 150 in number, created by King Arthur. Among the best known are Sir Lancelot, Sir Galahad, Sir Gawain and Sir Tristan. See also Round Table.

Labour Party : one of the two largest political parties in Britain, (together with the Conservative Party). It claims to represent the interests of the working class as against the interests of the employers, who represent capital. It grew up at the end of the 19th century and took its name in 1906. It draws its support from highly urban and industrialised areas, in the Midlands and the north of England; and is also supported by a significant part of the middle class, especially intellectuals.

licensing hours : The hours when pubs are open for the sale of alcoholic drink. The hours may vary from one part if the country to another, but are on average 11.30 am to 2.30 pm and 6.00 pm to 10.30 pm.

Liverpool FC : A popular and successful football club, founded in 1892, and having a ground at Anfield Road, Liverpool. They have been Football League champions 17 times this century, FA Cup winners twice, and European Champions several times.

lollipop lady / man : A woman or a man employed by a local authority (town council, county council, district council ...) to help children across a busy street on their way to or from school. She or he carries a pole with a disc on the end (resembling a lollipop) and holds it up to stop traffic.

 

London : The capital of Britain and its largest city, with a current population of about 7 million. The Houses of Parliament are there, as is the Queen's most important residence, Buckingham Palace. London stands on the river Thames, and is an important port. The docks and main industrial sites are in the East End while the East End is famous for its theatres and shops. The City is one of the most important financial centres in the world. There are many historical buildings in London, as well as famous art galleries, concert halls and opera houses (National Gallery, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Opera House ...). There are several and attractive public parks within the city (see Hyde Park). Administratively London consists of the City and 32 boroughs (Chelsea, Kensington ...).
