Victoria Cross : The highest British decoration, awarded for 'conspicuous bravery or devotion to the country in the presence of the enemy.' It was founded by Queen Victoria in 1856, and has been awarded fewer than 1,400 times since then (600 of these in the First World War). It shows the royal crown with a lion above it. Under the crown are the words, 'For Valour'.
